Statement by Minister of State Poilievre on the Supreme Court of Canada Hearings on Senate Reform

Ottawa, ON (November 12, 2013) – The Right Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of State (Democratic Reform), today issued the following statement:

"Today marks the opening of the hearings in the Supreme Court for our Government’s reference on the Senate. Our Government has asked the top Court for a legal instruction manual on Senate reform and Senate abolition. Canadians have waited 146 years for the Senate to change. This reference to our nation's top jurists will light the way.”

Harper Government Advances Senate Reform

Ottawa, ON (July 31, 2013) – The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, today announced that the Government is submitting factums for references on Senate reform that will be heard respectively in the Quebec Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Ottawa, ON (February 1st, 2013) – The Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, and the Honourable Claude Carignan, Senator and Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate, today announced the launch of a reference on Senate reform to the Supreme Court of Canada. The Government looks forward to receiving the Supreme Court’s opinion on what is required to reform the Senate and what is required to abolish the Senate.
