Prime Minister Harper urges action on Senate reform

The Hon. Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Democratic Reform) along with Member of Parliament Steven Blaney moved forward today with the Government of Canada’s commitment to strengthen the transparency and accountability of political financing.
“By strengthening the accountability of political loans our government is building on the principles of transparency and accountability enacted by our Government’s landmark Federal Accountability Act,” said Minister of State Fletcher. “This legislation is an important part of our Government’s agenda to strengthen accountability and democracy in Canada.”

The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Democratic Reform), along with Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu today encouraged provinces to establish a democratic process for selecting senators so Canadian voters can have a say on who represents them in the Senate.

The Hon. Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Democratic Reform), today with the Hon. Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Minister for La Francophonie, moved ahead with the Government of Canada's 2010 Throne Speech commitment to increase voter participation by giving Canadians more chances to vote during federal elections.
